2010 Information

The dates for the R.J. Shields this year are 28 March, 30 May, 29 August, and 31 October.

The tournaments will be run as stand alone tournaments, with trophies and certificates after each one. However after the 4th one, we will also accumulate everyones total scores to find the overall yearly 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in each age division, which are U8, U10, U12, U14, U18, and Open, who will receive additional prizes.
The winner of each tournament in U8, U10, U12, U14 and U18 divisions qualify for the R.J. Shield Finals which are on the 28 November 2010 at Monash Uni, Melbourne, with the overall yearly winner in each of these age divisions receiving sponsorship to attend these finals.

Times

Players should plan to arrive at the venue at 12:30pm in anticipation of a 1:00pm start to the first game.

We prefer online payment of entry fees in advance, however if you are paying by cash on the day please arrive by 12.30pm. We can accept new entries on the day (no later than 12.30pm), but players may be disappointed because there is no space for them to play. For this reason it is much better to register online in advance.

Parents dropping students off are required to be back by 5pm, but if making plans for the evening please be aware that presentations can easily extend the day out to 5:30pm.

Games

The “Swiss Format” ensures that all players will play against players of a similar standard; we expect both beginners and experts to enjoy a fun, learning and social experience.

All players play 7 games, regardless if they win or lose.

If a player wins a game, they score 1.0 point. In the subsequent game they play against a harder opponent. If a player draws a game, they score 0.5 points. In the subsequent game they play against a similar opponent. If a player loses a game, they score 0.0 points. In the subsequent game they play against an easier opponent.

Each game will be timed, with a maximum of 15 minutes per player, per game.
